To sell in multiple currencies on WooCommerce, install a currency switcher plugin, choose the currencies you want to offer, decide whether prices follow a live exchange rate or fixed prices, and test checkout in each currency. WooCommerce itself only has one store currency. For Wow Vastra, a UK boutique selling Indian occasion wear worldwide, I added a GBP, USD, EUR and INR switcher driven by a live exchange-rate API, then fixed the checkout so buyers abroad could actually finish.
Why does a store need more than one currency?
Because buyers abroad hesitate when the price is in a currency they do not think in. Wow Vastra sells sarees, lehengas and occasion wear from the UK to customers who pay in dollars, euros or rupees. Showing those buyers a sterling price makes them do the sum themselves and guess at the conversion fee. Showing the price in their own currency removes one reason to leave.
It also signals that the shop expects them. A store that only speaks GBP looks like it only ships in the UK.
What decisions come before choosing a plugin?
| Decision | Option | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Price source | Live exchange-rate API | Large catalogues, prices that track the market |
| Price source | Fixed price per currency | Round prices, stable pricing per market |
| Charging | In the buyer's currency | The clearest experience, if your gateway supports it |
| Charging | In the store currency, display only | Simpler accounting, but say so at checkout |
| Choosing the currency | Buyer picks from a switcher | Always works, and the buyer stays in control |
| Choosing the currency | Set by country | Fewer clicks, as long as the buyer can still change it |
On Wow Vastra I used a premium currency switcher plugin for the exchange rates rather than writing my own. The store runs on a purchased theme, and the rule on that project was to choose extensions that cooperate with the theme instead of replacing it.
How do you set up a currency switcher in WooCommerce?
- 1
Set the base currency
Keep the store currency as the one you account in. Wow Vastra's base is GBP.
- 2
Add the other currencies
Wow Vastra offers GBP, USD, EUR and INR. Add only the currencies your buyers actually use.
- 3
Choose the rate source
Connect a live exchange-rate API, or enter fixed rates or prices per currency.
- 4
Set rounding
Converted prices produce odd numbers. Decide on rounding rules so prices look deliberate.
- 5
Place the switcher
In the header, where buyers look first, and on the cart and checkout pages.
- 6
Test every currency end to end
Product, cart, checkout, the order email and the admin order record, in each currency.
What do international buyers need besides a currency switcher?
This is where most of the value was on Wow Vastra. The switcher got buyers to the checkout. These changes got them through it:
- A free-format worldwide address. A UK postcode form does not fit an address in India or the United States. I replaced it with a free-format address field for buyers outside the UK.
- A worldwide shipping notice in the header, so a buyer in another country knows the shop delivers before they start browsing.
- Clear variation pricing. Product variations became dropdowns with per-category attributes such as blouse stitching, and listings show the minimum variation price, so the price a buyer sees first is a real one.
Most of the value was in the mechanics
The Wow Vastra brief started with a homepage redesign, but the changes that helped buyers abroad were currency, address and variations. Shop mechanics usually matter more than the visual refresh that prompts the brief.
What can go wrong with a multi-currency store?
- Caching. A page cache can serve one visitor's currency to the next. Test with your cache switched on, from a private window, in each currency.
- The payment gateway. If you charge in the buyer's currency, the gateway has to accept it. Test a real payment in each one.
- Coupons and free shipping thresholds. A threshold set in pounds needs to make sense in rupees too. Check how your plugin converts them.
- Order emails and reports. Make sure the currency symbol and amount on the email match what the buyer paid, and that your reports are not adding pounds to rupees.
- Speed. Every extension adds weight. On Wow Vastra, moving asset loading into the theme and adding caching brought the desktop homepage to about 1.5 seconds.
Can you change the price display by country without a switcher?
Yes, on content pages. If your site runs on Bricks Builder, my free Geo Targeting for Bricks Builder plugin can show a pricing block in the right currency for each visitor's country. I explain the method in how to show different content by country in Bricks Builder. For a shop, though, the checkout must charge in a currency that matches what was shown, so use a proper WooCommerce currency plugin there.
Where should you start?
List the countries your orders actually come from, then pick currencies, rate source and charging rules before installing anything. The rest of a store launch is covered in my WooCommerce store build checklist. I set up international checkouts through my WooCommerce stores and online ordering service. Tell me what is holding your checkout back and I will reply with a plan.
