About the project
The engagement ran from August to December 2023 as a freelance project, with an ongoing maintenance plan after launch. IIID Inscape was a static publication with no easy way to publish new articles or showcase member portfolios. Every new feature meant developer time. The member work that is the heart of an interior design publication had no structured home on the site. The goal was a dynamic site that editors could publish to themselves, with articles and portfolios modelled properly so they could be listed, filtered and presented consistently, and a design that worked mobile-first. I started with stakeholder workshops and a content audit to define the structure. I then used CPT UI (a custom post type tool) and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to build custom post types for articles and portfolios with flexible fields the editors could manage themselves. The Figma designs became a mobile-first custom WordPress theme built on Oxygen Builder. I added image compression and caching for speed, integrated third-party APIs and secure authentication modules, and set up SSL, backups and restore. I trained the admins so they could publish without me. The stack was WordPress, CPT UI, Advanced Custom Fields, Oxygen Builder, PHP and Figma. Custom post types were the core decision. Treating articles and portfolios as structured content rather than pages gave the editors consistent templates and gave the site listing and archive pages for free. Advanced Custom Fields kept the editing experience to filling in fields. Image compression and caching mattered more than usual because a design publication is built on large photography. Backups and restore were set up from day one because the site held an archive the institute could not recreate. After launch the client reported 40 percent faster page loads, a 25 percent increase in engagement on article and portfolio pages, and editors publishing new features 50 percent quicker. Editors could add an article or a member portfolio through a form-like interface and see it appear in the right place with the right layout. The site is no longer online. Publishing a magazine or member showcase that still depends on a developer for every article? Send me the details and I will reply with a plan.
